I’m thinking about starting up a little side business. I want to start building some utility pedals like true bypass loops, A/B (or A/B/Y) switches, tap tempo boxes, etc. I like doing this kind of tinkering for fun, but it’s hard to make it work as a business.
I think I’m going to start with the tap tempo boxes like the one I built for myself. Sometime in the next month or so, I’m going to try to buy enough materials to build 20-25 of them and sell them for $20 each. Any interest?

If I had a DD-5 instead of my Echo Park, I’d definitely be interested in a $20 dedicated TT switch. Almost considering trading out the EP just because I primarily use a dotted 1/8th and leave it alone…. The other stuff’s cool for kicks, but I don’t use it enough.
I guess put me down as a maybe. =)
I’d love a couple of tap tempo switches, and a loop would be pretty nice once my pedaltrain comes in.
id buy an a/b/y box.
Actually… if I do get a DD-5… How hard would it be to enclose a tap tempo and a looper in the same box. 1 Box, 3 jacks, 1 latching sw, 1 momentary sw.
That way DD-5, DD-20 users, etc could control the true bypass/engage and tap tempo functions on one mxr sized box. Think that would be worth doing? Say at like $30 or $40?
You’re going to run into a need for LED ligths and power supplies, do you know how to do that stuff? It sounds like a hard business to make much $$ on but if you can find a way to fix a problem, like hxchip described, and find a demand, it could work!
I have a DD-20… I would love to buy a tap tempo.
hxchip – that is doable, but it would require 5 jacks. 4 for the looper and one for the tap tempo. That would be significantly more than $40. As a point of reference Robert Keeley charges $85 for just the looper. Loop-Master charges $40 for a basic looper with no LEDs. I could do it, but I don’t know how much to charge for it.
I’m just not sure how to go about doing this, or if it’s even worth doing. I don’t know how to set myself up as a business, and I don’t want to get nailed on the tax thing, either.
I may just try a small batch of tap tempo boxes and/or bypass loops and see what happens from there.
Mike – I have built stuff like this before. I know how to read schematics and I’ve wired LEDs, power supplies, etc. I could handle the building part of it, but I don’t know about the business end of it.
Oh yeah, 5, I meant to say that… heh….. Well hold off completely from my idea as a “base product” if you know what I mean until it could be proven profitable. IF I get a DD-5 or other external tap delay, I might ask for a custom and pay whatever you deem fit (assuming I have the money to spend beforehand).
Otherwise, just go for it man. Make the basics and work from there. Heck, I really wouldn’t mind in the slightest if I were to use 2 separate boxes, I just thought it’d look neat and be a unique pedal. =D I do see where it can be costly though, as I forgot some key ingredients (like the uitar in and amp out jacks – D’OH)
I linked this on http://electriccom.blogspot.com, hopefully someone will read it and get in touch
Setting up a business shouldn’t be terribly hard. I’m sure there are a million websites and books about it. You’d probably want to be a LLC, you’ll have to pay for the forms and registration though. I don’t think the tax man will care unless you’re making a significan’t profit. No one registers their garage sale as a business, for example. Might want to take a trip to the library
I have a DD-20 and totally understand the tap tempo dilemma. I would love a tap switch. Make one and I’ll buy it. And don’t go with the plastic like you considered. Make ‘em tough for the long haul.
I would buy the tap switch. Let me know how to get in contact with you.
I am interested in a tap switch as well, please let me know how to get in touch with you. Thanks
There has obviously been quite a bit of interest here, but I’m afraid that I just haven’t been able to figure out a way to bring my costs down without buying in larger quantities than I’m comfortable with. My cost per box would be about $16-17 and I don’t think it’s worth the investment to make a profit of $3-4.
dooo it. i will buy several, lol.
if you decide & change your mind to make some, please please let me know, my email is mlairuk@gmail.com
You need to snag a hand-painted Pulse from me.

I would be interested in the tap temp. I like the smaller size. Shoot me an email if you are interested in selling.
Thanks,
