Alright, here are a couple of clips that I whipped up. They’re not exactly high-fidelity, since I ran my pedalboard into a Peavey keyboard amp and recorded it with the built-in mic on my MacBook, but you’ll get the idea.

The first one is a basic dotted eighth note delay. I play the same arpeggio-type thing 4 times. Here’s the breakdown:
1) DD-20 in digital mode
2) DD-20 in digital with the Echo Park on a long analog delay model
3) DD-20 in analog mode
4) DD-20 in analog with the Echo Park on a long analog delay model

The second clip is a real basic sound-on-sound demo. I only recorded 2 layers, but you can do a lot more with it. It’s an excellent excuse to play a basic ii-V (Amin-D9) and practice some Dorian licks a la Santana’s version of Oye Como Va. Again, this is not a great demo, since the amp is not really EQ’d for distorted electric guitar. In addition, the output of the amp overdrives the mic in a couple of spots.

  1. Sounds great! Nice use of both delays. I was just playing around the other day with half note delay in the first delay and quarter in the second. It’s great for vol swells or delay that you want to go on for a really, really long time!

  2. sweet! thanks for the clips. i used to have an Echo Park, but it had some unfriendly noise. sounds like yours is nice and clean.

  3. yeah aren’t there some cool modulation type effects on the dd-20 too? the one thing that i like about that echo park are the different kinds of cool effects, which it seems like the dd-20 has way more of. i was reading that one forum that someone linked up here on your site, it was like tweakers overload. id be interested to hear the stuff through your normal rig too.

  4. Sweet arpeggios, man.

  5. Dorian licks? Never heard of these…please explain. Love the clips and the use of the DD-20. I’ll have to try the sound on sound with my DD-20. Thanks!

  6. Dorian is a mode. A mode is a type of scale, along with major and minor. Dorian is a minor mode, since it has a minor third at the beginning.

I actually screwed up when I played that example. I was just playing A minor.

    A minor = A B C D E F G A
    A dorian = A B C D E F# G A

As you can see, the only difference is the F#. I was playing mostly F naturals in the solo part. I was thinking that the song was in D instead of A.

  7. Hey man I thought of you. I came across a review of the Boss RT-20 saying it’s versatility and incredible tones were worth the real estate on a board and gave great use for ambient slow stuff as well as high energy. I’d been basically unfamiliar with them. Have you ever checked them out?

  8. I’ve never played one before. The demos that I’ve seen/heard make it look really powerful, but I haven’t been blown away by anything. It looks like it has the potential to do some really cool sounds, but I’m not sure that it would be something that I would really use.

  9. sounds sweet. I need to work on my delays.

    :)
