I got a call last night from Paul Cochrane letting me know that my Timmy overdrive pedal is (finally) ready. It only took 7 months. It will probably be here this week.

Our church is ordering a new guitar amp. We’re getting a Vox AC15 and an Eminence Red Fang speaker to put in it. The students will use it, and I will use it on the weekend services so that I don’t have to tote my Stulce back and forth.

As a result, I now have an extra guitar cabinet that I don’t need. It’s an Avatar G112 open back with an 8 ohm Hellatone 30. If you’re interested in the cab, the speaker, or both – let me know and maybe we can work something out.

  1. Crap, I guess I need to get them to buy me an amp, too, seeing as how my rig is over 2 grand up there, just waiting to get stolen.

I wouldn’t want to share with the kids — and I wouldn’t want an AC15 for sure. Who picked that out? (Hoping it wasn’t you while I say that — no offense if it was.) There are boat-loads of better, non-Chinese, non mass-production amps out there.

Not to mention the price of an AC15 is about what a separate monitor-only board would cost.

  2. My main concern wasn’t really the theft issue. I was just starting to feel a little stupid for leaving a really great amp up at church all the time and not having anything to play through at home. If I had something decent at the house, I probably wouldn’t have bothered.

Yeah, I picked the AC15. I didn’t want to go with an American-made boutique amp that would have cost twice as much (or something like it) and would’ve taken 6 weeks to build. Worst case scenario: it comes in and I don’t like it at all, so we return it to Musician’s Friend. I don’t really see that happening, though. I just need a decent clean tone to run pedals in front of, and the AC15 should be able to deliver that, especially with the Eminence speaker.

  3. Theft, fire, flood, getting messed with — those are my biggies. And, of course, I’d like to have my Goodsell at home just on general principal! I think it’s a good idea for the church to provide this stuff, and it’s something Greg and Jason and I have talked about in the past.

  4. I think the AC15 is a good choice. Fairly inexpensive, sounds quite decent and come on, you just can’t beat the look of a Vox. ;) I had an AC15 handwired series, and I was quite pleasantly surprised with how good it sounded.

  5. Yes, Voxes look cool — but they just aren’t my thing, and their QC has been poor since they started mass-producing.

I’d take a Traynor over a Vox any day. You get 3 12ax and either 5881s or EL34s, depending which model. I’ve been craving a CV50 Blue for a while now — but my Stulce is still the best amp I’ve ever used .

  6. i got a traynor ycv40wr and i love it. ycv50 are great, too! and i agree about the qc of the voxes, i heard so many horror stories of it breaking down :(

  7. I have the 20w Traynor, and it’s great. My only complaint was how hard it was/is to swap tubes — but that’s only due to the small form-factor of the amp head.

  8. TIM here yet?!?!

  9. I haven’t gotten the Timmy yet, but hopefully it’ll show up by this weekend.

  10. I have the AC-15 with the Wharfdale Speaker. I just love it. I typically run mine with the gain around 1-2 o’clock. If I’m lucky enough to have my master up above quarter of the way, I’ll roll the gain back a bit. Great “bit of dirt” cleans (you can run it perfectly clean, but why would you want to?) to great classic british crunch. It gets really loud, and it takes pedals really well too. I use a Bad Monkey and depending on which guitar I use (Tele or Scheter) I’ll use a Rat-sounding distortion, or a Marshall Guv’nor 2 plus, as well as a Echo Park for Delay.

My main complaints are that there is no mids control, and the spring reverb is really touchy. It sort of goes from a little bit of bounce in the sound to all out Ventures surf-rock madness really quickly. Tremolo is great, it it’s your thing. Mine didn’t come with the footswitch, so I never use it.Another thing to watch out for is the Tolex is really thin. Mine has nicks all over it from putting on and taking off the road case I have it in.

If you don’t end up keeping it (Do give it a good chance, a few weeks at least) Check out the Egnater Rebel 20. I think it’s pretty awesome. It has 6l6′s for Fender-ish sounds & EL84′s for your british sounds that you can pan between, a knob that adjusts 1-20 watts, and switches for normal/bright and tight/loose.
It’s the same price as an AC15 by the way. http://www.egnateramps.com/Rebel20.html

  11. Wow, that Egnater sounds pretty sweet! I wonder how smooth the tube transition is. AND WHY DO AMP-MAKERS *NOT* PUT AUDIO SAMPLES ONLINE?!?

  12. Why did I not see that before I decided on the AC15? The Rebel looks pretty great, even though it is also made in China.

I found a couple of video clips here and here.

I used the AC15 last night, and it sounds pretty good, but I didn’t have a lot of time to mess with it. It’s got a really big clean tone, and I think it’ll work out just fine. The reverb is pretty useless (the decay is too long). The tremolo sounds good, but I’ll have no way to switch it on and off or adjust the controls since the amp is backstage in an isolation box.

  13. Oh crap, I didn’t even think about asking if it had come in yet.

I’m crazy-tempted to pick up the Egnater. Tube access is sweet, so I can quickly and easily put in whatever I want (I’m not that big of a fan of GTs).

    CRIPES!!11!

    :shakes fist:

  14. Looking deeper into the Egnater…

It’s not cathode biased, but there are trimpots on the board to set voltages. While this doesn’t make tube swaps “instant,” it’s at least “user-accessible.”
